spiritual self

January 11, 2009

“we can gradually drop our ideals of who we think we ought to be, or who we think we want to be, or who we think other people think we want and ought to be. We give it up and just look directly with compassion and humor at who we are.”

“this very moment is the perfect teacher, and it’s always with us”

these are two quotes from Pema Chodron’s When Things Fall Apart. This is the second time i’ve read it (things seem to fall apart a lot :)) but i learn it all over again, every time. when i’m upset, i catch myself constantly running and re-running past and possible situations in my head. before i know it, i’m crying or angry at something that my mind made up, something that hasn’t existed i a long time or maybe never existed. it’s wild the ability our minds have to drive us crazy and continue to cause us pain. letting go and living in mindfullness is something i have to practice everysingleday. but it’s worth it – one day of awareness can feel like a lifetime (which is especially wonderful if you happen to be living in spain, drinking coffee and reading and writing in parks). !!!
